Philanthropy

Alpha Xi Delta's interest in children and their special needs led us to adopt Choose Children, a initiative that emphasizes voluntary service in all areas of child well-being. Choose Children isn't an organization - it's an idea.

Unlike many other Greek organizations, Alpha Xi Delta is not exclusively linked with one philanthropic organization. Alpha Xi Delta gives members the flexibility to look in their communities and decide how they can best benefit children.

The Zeta Theta Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta works with several children’s organizations within the Dayton community.  The Chapter here at Wright State provides each sister with several opportunities to serve and will help match any member with an appropriate outlet for their abilities, passions and time constraints. Presently we are focusing on a goal within our chapter to give a year worth of service.

Just a few of our Volunteer Opportunities

  1. March of Dimes:  We participate in the March of Dime’s Walk America every year and this year it is anticipated that it will be our most successful.  The March of Dimes funds Initiatives which increase the survival of pre-mature babies and infants with critical illnesses.
  2. Big Brother/Big Sister:  Several of our sisters will be mentoring local children through BB/BS an organization which promotes the positive social, intellectual and emotional growth of youth through sibling type relationships with volunteers.
  3. American Diabetes Association:  Every person in the United States will be affected by Diabetes at some point in there life.  Several of our chapter’s members have been touched by the disease and in October over 1/3 of the chapter showed their support by raising over $800 and walking for the cause.   ADA finances education, prevention, treatment and a cure for both Juvenile (Type 1) and Adult Onset (Type 2) Diabetes.
  4. Summer Camps: Several sisters participate in overnight and day camps that are held in the summer months.  Members assist children in many activities including, arts and crafts, games, health and education.  Camps include YMCA, Summerbridge, Urban Youth’s Day Camp, and Diabetes Camp.
  5. Ohio Reads: Volunteers tutor children in reading and attempt to improve on Ohio’s failing literacy rates.  Literacy is the key to education and giving a child the tools to becoming fully literate is giving the child a chance to succeed.
  6. Twin Towers Head Start Preschool:  This is an organization with little funding who teaches 3-5 year olds the basics that they will need to have to go on to kindergarten.  Volunteers assist the administrators through arts and crafts, reading and in some cases instructing the young children.
  7. Homeless:  When a parent becomes homeless so do their children.  By donating to and serving The Other Place (homeless shelter) and St Vincent DePaul (homeless shelter and help center) we help the children and parents so that they can be provided the essentials that are needed for living on the streets.
